Namibia vs Australia
Australia earned their place in the Super Eights after an emphatic win against Namibia, crushing them by 73 runs with Josh Hazlewood’s two strikes in the third and fifth over to reduce Namibia to 15-3 and leave David Warner caught off-guard during the second over, but Travis Head (34 off 17 balls) and Mitchell Marsh (18 off nine) brought Australia home without too much fuss.
Pat Cummins and Hazlewood made an early statement as Australia tightened their grip on the game with two wickets from Pat Cummins and Hazlewood in their opening over. Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus held out for 36 from 43 balls but eventually fell victim to leg-spinner Adam Zampa’s leg-spinner attack which dismantled their middle order.
FOUR! An uneven boundary but it will do the job; shorter in the center and around off. Bring this one over gully for a simple four.
Glenn Maxwell once again produced a sensational catch. This time around he caught it at backward point as Davin van Lingen attempted to hit an fuller delivery, which unfortunately nipped late and hit Glenn Maxwell squarely for six at third man fence!
Namibia are in dire straits and continue to worsen as their new batsmen fail to capitalise on good starts. Hazlewood slices through their lower order, pushing them closer towards collapse with his fielding efforts outside off. He attempts to test his line outside off but van Lingen can’t resist taking an early dab at his ball which finds extra bounce before travelling all the way backward point where Maxwell is waiting patiently.
TWO OUT! A magnificent spell by a leg-spinner who can trouble even the greatest batsmen. He used his variation to get one to turn sharply and pitched on off stump; Erasmus tried driving it but failed to make good contact; it skid past his edge and flew straight to a fielder at deep mid wicket who made an excellent dive to take a brilliant catch.
Australian spinner Adam Zampa took two more wickets before the end of this over as he ran through the middle order with astonishing accuracy, catching Stephan Baard off an incorrect pull before producing a stunning wrong’un that sent Bernard Scholtz packing for a second-ball duck. Zampa ended this impressive spell with four wickets to his name – becoming the first Australian to reach 100 T20I wickets!
Australia complete a decisive victory with one final, dramatic over. Hazlewood’s short ball nips back into the batsmen and then follows it with one that contains extra bounce – cutting into Van Lingen who cannot generate enough power behind his stroke to send it towards square leg for a single.
Australia has earned themselves an unassailable lead after their dominating performance on the field, easily making light work of their run chase. Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh anchored their innings with impressive hitting while captain David Warner made an eye-catching cameo appearance. This result ensures Australia finishes second in Group B with just one match remaining against Oman.
