France were trounced by world champions Spain in the opening UEFA Women’s Nations League semi-finals. But more than just a trophy is at stake come February; two Olympic quota spots will also be on offer.

Teams’ finishing positions at the end of league stage will determine whether they qualify for finals play and their starting league ranking for European Qualifiers phase.

League A

The UEFA Women’s Nations League Standings provide results and standings of the international competition that pits senior women’s national teams of all member associations of UEFA against each other in three leagues with promotion and relegation between them, plus a final tournament to determine champions. League play occurs from September to December while February marks its finals tournament.

The 2023-24 UEFA Women’s Nations League marked its inaugural season and served as an alternative to both UEFA Women’s Championship and World Cup qualifying competitions, in addition to qualifying France for Paris 2024 Olympic Women’s Football Tournament as hosts. Each group of League A advanced to compete for an invitation to the Nations League Finals which featured two-legged semi-finals and single leg third-place playoffs with winners receiving Olympic spots quota spots at 2024 Olympics.

League B

The 2024-25 UEFA Women’s Nations League marks the inaugural season of an international football competition dedicated to senior women’s national teams. Comprised of both a league phase and final tournament to determine champions, this tournament also serves as a qualifying competition for both UEFA Women’s Championship and FIFA Women’s World Cup during non-Olympic years. All UEFA member associations except Gibraltar, Liechtenstein and San Marino participate in its league phase competition.

The top four teams from each group move forward to a quarter-final round played over two legs. The four winners of these quarter-final matches qualify for the Nations League Finals scheduled to be hosted by their highest ranked team from group stage play in March 2025.

The 2023-24 UEFA Women’s Nations League season marked its inaugural run, featuring teams competing in round robin format for points and rankings in each group before qualifying for finals which took place in February 2024. Results of this competition determined which teams would move up from League C to League B, seeding for Euro 2025 qualifying draws (except Gibraltar Liechtenstein San Marino did not submit entries so could not qualify) as well as two quota spots at Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Finals

League A group winners compete in the final tournament in February 2024, played as a knockout competition with single-leg semi-finals, third place play-off and a final matchup. Additionally, this event doubles up as a qualifying tournament for the 2024 Summer Olympic Women’s Football tournament, with both finalist automatically qualifying.

Spain have shown they could reach the finals following an impressive performance on Matchday 2 in Switzerland. Goals scored by Aitana Bonmati and Mariona Caldentey gave La Roja a 2-1 victory against Sweden before Esther Gonzalez secured victory against Italy with her late conciliation.

England can still qualify for Olympic qualification; to do so they will need to better Belgium’s result and hope the Netherlands don’t beat Scotland on Sunday. A top two finish will ensure an Olympic spot as Team GB coach Sarina Wiegman can select players from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as part of Team GB squad selection process.
