The International Olympic Committee has been exploring ways to incorporate competitive video gaming into the Olympic Games, and plans to do so via an event known as Olympic Esports Games which is scheduled to debut in 2025.

The IOC seeks to engage younger audiences but faces several hurdles, such as those presented by violent video game titles. Furthermore, they wish to avoid conflicts with companies operating the games.

League of Legends

The 2025 Olympic eSports Games will be an eye-opener, introducing video gaming into the Olympics for the first time. Esports should help draw younger audiences while simultaneously increasing Olympic revenues through sponsorships – something IOC has long sought as traditional sports audiences age.

Esports has proven an ideal medium for expanding events and drawing in younger audiences, and has quickly become a global phenomenon with dedicated fans and high-profile tournaments. Furthermore, its social impact can be tremendous as many gamers pursue professional gaming careers.

Though virtual games will be held, they must still align with Olympic values of fair play and nonviolence – a challenge given that video game lifespan is highly unpredictable and some titles could quickly vanish from existence.

Rocket League

Rocket League, the physics-driven sports video game that has quickly become incredibly popular since its inclusion in the Olympic Games, has quickly gained global acclaim. Teams of three players work cooperatively to advance the ball downfield and score goals against their opponents’ nets; top performers in RLCS earn fame, fortune, and recognition for their skills.

Though the IOC has yet to announce which games will be included in its Olympic Esports Games, it is expected to include both virtual and traditional sports. First-person shooters like Counter-Strike and Call of Duty involving violence and weapons are likely excluded; however, Street Fighter and Tekken may make the cut due to requiring strategy and hand-eye coordination.

Street Fighter

Street Fighter may appear simple at first glance, yet its depth lies hidden. It has been featured in numerous tournaments and remains one of the longest-running fighting games available today. It boasts an intricate yet accessible combat system which enables players to execute different attacks including Wave Fist, Rising Dragon Punch and Hadoken Shoryuken Tatsumaki Senpukyaku Senpoukyaku Senpukyaku Senpukyaku Senpukyaku for maximum player enjoyment.

The International Olympic Committee is hoping to lure big esports titles into the Olympics. According to reports, it has entered into a partnership agreement with Saudi Arabia’s National Olympic Committee for 12 years and plans are already underway to select a city and venue for its inaugural event as well as define specific timing, titles and qualification processes for participants – although any games played must still feature physical elements for optimal participation.

Tekken

Tekken has long been considered one of the premier three-dimensional fighting games, captivating fans worldwide with its unique blend of three-dimensional fighting techniques and gripping stories. Now included in Olympic competition, its inclusion is an historic milestone for eSports.

IOC has yet to release their list of games that will be included in their Olympic esports competition; however, Rod “Slasher” Breslau believes League of Legends, Rocket League, Street Fighter and Tekken may make the cut. Additionally, iRacing may make the list since its wide array of vehicles and tracks is popular in America.

As video game companies own the intellectual property rights for their games, participation could be denied from companies that own such rights.

iRacing

The IOC has entered into an exciting 12-year agreement with the National Olympic Committee of Saudi Arabia to create and host its inaugural Olympic Esports Games. These digital sporting competitions will include various digital sports like iRacing – an online racing simulation that lets users race real cars virtually, adding real racing thrills and spills right to Olympic competition.

Rod “Slasher” Breslau, an eSports expert and veteran in his own right, predicts that popular titles like League of Legends, Rocket League, Street Fighter Tekken NBA 2K FIFA mobile games could all feature. Shooter games however are unlikely to make an appearance.

The Olympic Esports Games will necessitate a new structure, distinct from that of traditional Olympics. This will include dedicating a city, providing rules and qualifications for prospective athletes and developing unique games.
