2024 Summer Olympic Games Medals
2024 Summer Olympic Games Medals
Now that the Olympic Games in Paris have come and gone, both China and the US tied atop the overall medal count with 40 gold medals each; marking a first ever tie at any summer Olympic games medal count.
Each medal was designed by Chaumet, an LVMH Group company, and features a piece of iron from the Eiffel Tower at its core.
Gold
As the Olympics wind down, gold medal tallies have been determined. The United States led with 126 total medals won, followed by China and Great Britain.
At the Paris Games, several new Olympic sports made their debut: breaking (commonly referred to as break dancing), kayak cross, and surfing were among them. Each event is meant to appeal to young audiences by featuring activities associated with youth culture that honor creativity and athletic performance.
The 2024 Olympic medals feature the iconic Eiffel Tower on their reverse sides as a nod to France and host city of the Games, Paris. A graphic representation of its upward perspective is surrounded by words “Paris 2024” and stylized foot written in universal Braille as a nod to French innovator Louis Braille who created this tactile writing system. Each medal also contains fine lines embossed into it to help blind and partially sighted athletes differentiate among metals.
Silver
Silver medals are awarded to athletes who finish second in an event, typically leading to Great Britain, Germany and France being among the major recipients.
Bronze medalists are also awarded for their efforts, though less elaborately than gold and silver. Each bronze medal comes adorned with an original piece of iron from the Eiffel Tower; once removed of its iconic brown paint coating and set into place in the medal’s center as a reminder of Paris and French heritage – a fitting way to pay homage to its host city.

Bronze
Bronze medals at the Olympic Games are awarded to athletes who finish third in each event, plated with bronze and weighing three grams each.
The 2024 Olympic Games ran from July 26 to August 11 and featured many newcomers competing in brand new sports like kayak cross, breaking (break dancing) and sport climbing – which all made their Olympic debut this summer.
Gracenote predicts Team USA to finish first in the medal count at Paris 2024 with an estimated total of 126 medals–nearly double their haul at Tokyo 2020. China should take second with 91 and Great Britain will come third with 65. Germany has seen their medal count decrease at six out of seven Olympic Games; Gracenote anticipates this trend continuing by projecting just 35 medals for them this time around; The Netherlands may surpass their previous best performance with 50 medals being projected as their total haul for Paris.
Specialty Medals
The Olympics have long been known to honor athletes beyond gold, silver and bronze medals. Every year, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) adds new sports and offers several specialty medals – often called Individual Neutral Athletes or “AINAs” due to not belonging to national Olympic teams and therefore not qualifying for awards based on country-of-origin criteria.
This summer, 30 AINAs will compete in events like archery and cycling. AINAs provide an ideal way for the IOC to engage younger audiences while providing nations that don’t yet possess national Olympic teams with an opportunity to showcase their athleticism on an international stage.
At this summer’s 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, both countries tied with 40 gold medals each – marking an unprecedented tie at any Summer Olympic games! Medal-winning athletes received plush versions of Marianne or her helmet representing France as their mascot, depending on which character won them a medal.
