Summer Olympics Games Schedule and Results
At the 2024 Olympics, there will be 206 national Olympic committees representing 10,500 athletes from over 200 nations. The Opening Ceremony will be hosted by Paris along the Seine River; surfing will make its debut 9,000 miles away at Teahupo’o; while basketball stars like LeBron James aim to create history once more.
Swimming
FINA (Federation Internationale de Natation) oversees Olympic swimming events. Events are hosted in long course pools that meet long course criteria – these have ten racing lanes measuring 25 meters each with races being run in one lap around.
Starting blocks are raised tilted platforms used by competitors at the start of races to gain velocity at the beginning. Starting blocks feature grippy surfaces designed to prevent swimmers’ feet from slipping while offering adjustable wedges for extra grip and support.
A clerk of the course (also referred to as seeding) gathers swimmers before each event and places them into heats (also referred to as seeding) according to their times. Furthermore, this official is responsible for upholding rules regarding swimmers who scratch from events or decide not to compete in semifinals and finals.
Gymnastics
Gymnastics is an amazing sport that demands balance, strength, flexibility, agility and coordination to compete at its highest level. Additionally, gymnastics teaches body awareness that can reduce injuries such as sprains. Gymnastics offers numerous health benefits like improved posture, lower blood pressure and decreased stress levels.
Rhythmic gymnastics showcases skill, flexibility and musicality using balls, hoops and clubs, scoring according to an annual Code of Points that renews itself at each Olympic Games.
Women’s artistic gymnastics (WAG) involves routines on uneven bars, balance beams and floor exercise equipment; Men’s artistic gymnastics (MAG) incorporates pommel horses, still rings, parallel bars and high bars into individual and team-based events that test endurance, agility and strength; this sport became famous due to 14-year old Nadia Comaneci’s fame due to MAG.
Athletics
The Olympic Games feature an abundance of sports, some of which have been present since every edition. Meanwhile, newer disciplines like surfing and sport climbing, which made their debut during 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games are a welcome addition.
Paris will host its third Olympic Games – joining London and Athens as cities to have hosted this event three times each.
Rowing
Paris kicked off the 2024 Summer Olympic Games with an unmissable ceremony that took place along its famed Seine River, in direct contrast with Tokyo’s 2020 opening ceremony which was conducted without spectators present in a stadium setting.
Gracenote’s final Virtual Medal Table projects that the Dutch team will put in an outstanding performance at these Games, exceeding their best ever Olympic total of 12 medals from Sydney 2000.
The Olympic sports program currently comprises 329 medal events. These Games will include several new sports such as surfing and skateboarding; breaking (formerly known as break dancing) will make its Olympic debut; kayak cross and sport climbing will both return after making their initial debuts back in 2021.
Cycling
Cycling (also known as biking or road racing) has been an Olympic event since 1896. At first only open to men’s competitors, Olympic women’s competition began in 1984 as well. Mountain biking became its own event later that same year.
The Olympic Games take place every four years; however, due to coronavirus pandemic in 2020, they were postponed until 2024. In 2024, however, they kicked off with a spectacular light show at Eiffel Tower and performances by Lady Gaga and Celine Dion; with closing ceremonies planned for Aug 11 at Paris Stade de France – featuring athletes parading their flags and receiving medals as they pass in front of its gates – featuring 48 medal events across three categories.
